First, the difference

An MOT and a service are not the same thing.

People often assume one covers the other. It doesn't, and knowing why is exactly why booking both together is worth it. Here is what each one actually does.

A legal check

The MOT

  • A pass-or-fail inspection required by law once your car is three years old, then every 12 months.
  • Checks the car is roadworthy on the day. Brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, seatbelts and emissions, all to the DVSA minimum standard.
  • It does not fix, replace or adjust anything. It tells you what is wrong; it does not put it right.
  • The result goes straight onto the DVSA database, so your MOT history updates automatically.
Preventative care

The service

  • Not a legal requirement, but the single best way to stop small problems turning into big bills.
  • We change the engine oil and filter, then check the fluids, brakes, steering, suspension, lights and tyres.
  • Anything worn gets flagged, so you know about it before it leaves you stranded or fails an MOT.
  • You get a clear written record of what was done, so your service history stays intact for resale.
Why do both at once

When we service a car it comes up on the ramp, the wheels come off and we go through it properly. That is most of the setup an MOT needs anyway. Doing the two together means one drop-off, one collection, and the MOT at +£39.99 rather than full price.

Timing

You can add the MOT up to 28 days early.

You don't have to wait until your MOT is about to run out. Test within the last 28 days of your current certificate and your renewal date stays exactly where it is. You keep the full 12 months and effectively get up to 13 months of cover.

So if a service is due now and your MOT lapses in the next few weeks, book both together now. Test more than 28 days early and the renewal date moves to the test day, so it's usually worth timing it inside the window. More on MOT timing →

What to bring

Just the car, and two small things if you have them.

  • Your service book
    If you would like the service noted in it. If your car keeps its history digitally, tell us the make and we will let you know how we handle the record.
  • A locking wheel-nut key
    If your car has one, leave it in the car so the wheels can come off for the brake and tyre checks.
  • Nothing else
    No need to dig out your old MOT certificate. We look the details up on the DVSA database.

MOT + service, common questions

Do I save money booking them together?
Yes. A standalone Class 4 MOT is £49.99. Add it onto any service booked at the same time and it drops to just +£39.99, because the car is already with us and up on the ramp. You book the service you were going to have anyway, and the MOT comes in at a fraction of its usual price.
Can I add the MOT even if it is not due yet?
Yes. You can test up to 28 days before your current MOT runs out and keep the same renewal date next year. So if your service is due now and your MOT runs out in the next few weeks, doing both together loses you nothing on the calendar.
Which service should I choose with my MOT?
It depends on your mileage and when the car was last serviced. An interim service suits higher-mileage cars between full services; a full service is the yearly once-over. If you are not sure, give us the reg and your mileage and we will point you to the right one.
What if the MOT finds something during the service?
Because we are already servicing the car, most MOT items can be sorted in the same visit rather than booking a second appointment. We will always show you what has failed and explain it in plain terms.
Will you record the service in my book?
Yes, bring your service book and we will note the work in it. Some newer cars keep their history digitally with the manufacturer instead of in a paper book. If yours does, tell us the make when you book and we will let you know how we handle the record for your car.
