Driving without an MOT

What the law actually says.

The short version: you cannot, with one narrow exception. Driving without a valid MOT is against the law, it can cost you up to £1,000, and it can invalidate your insurance. Here is the detail, including the one time it is allowed.

If yours has lapsed, the simplest fix is to book it in and come straight to us.

The basics

Can you drive without a valid MOT?

No. It is against the law to drive on a public road without a valid MOT, with a single exception: driving to or from a pre-booked MOT or repair appointment, and only if the car is actually roadworthy at the time.

That is the whole of it. There is no grace period after your MOT expires, and no allowance for popping to the shops in the meantime.

The penalties

Two separate offences, two separate fines.

These are often muddled together, but they are not the same thing. Driving without an MOT and driving a dangerous car are dealt with separately.

up to £1,000
Driving without a valid MOT

Drive on a public road without a current MOT and you can be fined up to £1,000. Police and roadside cameras can check the DVSA database from your number plate, so it is easily spotted.

up to £2,500 + points
Driving in a dangerous condition

If the car is in a dangerous condition, that is a separate and more serious offence. It carries a fine of up to £2,500, penalty points, and a possible driving ban, whether or not the MOT is in date.

Worth knowing

Beyond the fine.

You cannot tax the car

A valid MOT is needed to tax a vehicle. Once the MOT lapses you cannot renew the tax either, so the two tend to catch up with each other quickly.

Your insurance can be affected

Driving without a valid MOT can invalidate your insurance. If you are in an accident, a claim can be reduced or refused, which can leave you covering the costs yourself.

The one exception

You are allowed to drive to or from a pre-booked MOT or repair appointment, and only if the car is genuinely roadworthy. That exception does not cover a car in a dangerous state.
