When is my MOT due?
The quickest way to check is to enter your registration below. We'll pull your car's current MOT details straight from the DVSA database, including the due date. You can also find the expiry date printed on your last MOT certificate.
A new car needs its first MOT on the third anniversary of its registration date. After that, it’s once every 12 months. Some vehicles, like taxis and ambulances, need testing from one year old.
An MOT certificate runs for 12 months from the expiry of your previous one, not from the day of the test — provided you test within the last 28 days of the old certificate. You’ll find the expiry date on your current certificate.
You can test up to 28 days before your current certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date. Do that and the new certificate effectively runs for 13 months — you lose nothing for being early.
You can test whenever you like, but if it’s more than 28 days before expiry, the renewal date resets to the day of the new test. Usually worth timing it within the 28-day window.
Test early, keep your date.
Say your current certificate expires on the 20th July. You can test any time from the 22nd June, that's 28 days before, and your new certificate still runs to the following 20th July. You keep the same renewal date and effectively get 13 months out of one test. Leave it later and there's no penalty, but test more than 28 days early and the renewal date resets to the day of the test.
Driving without a valid MOT.
An MOT is a legal requirement. Without a valid one you can't tax the car, and driving it can mean a fine of up to £1,000. Driving a car in a dangerous condition is a separate, more serious offence that carries a fine of up to £2,500 and penalty points. Police cameras can check your MOT status from your number plate, and an out-of-date MOT can affect an insurance claim.
The one exception: you're allowed to drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment. So if yours has lapsed, book in and come straight to us.
