The bigger classes need a larger bay and their own DVSA authorisation. We are authorised for Class 5, larger passenger vehicles with 13 or more seats, and Class 7, goods vehicles over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg, alongside the standard Class 4 cars and vans.

Which class is your vehicle?
An MOT class is set by the type and weight of the vehicle, not its age. Here is how the three we test break down.
Cars & light vans
The standard MOT for cars, light vans and other light vehicles up to 3,000kg, including dual-purpose vehicles and those with up to 12 passenger seats. This is the test most drivers need.
Minibuses & large passenger vehicles
Private passenger vehicles with 13 or more passenger seats. These need extra seatbelt and seating checks on top of the standard test, and a bay set up to take them.
Larger goods vehicles
Goods vehicles between 3,001kg and 3,500kg design gross weight. They are the bigger vans and light commercial vehicles that fall just above a Class 4, with extra tyre-load and brake-efficiency checks.

A Class 5 or 7 test covers everything a Class 4 does, and then some. The extras reflect the fact that these vehicles carry more people or more weight, so they need the right bay and the right authorisation to test properly.
On top of the standard test, larger passenger vehicles get extra seatbelt and seating checks, and they need a bay set up to take them.
Bigger vans and light commercials get the standard test plus extra tyre-load and brake-efficiency checks, because they carry more weight.
