Find the fault, not just the symptom.

Every modern car relies on an engine management system that flags problems early, but only if someone reads it properly. We use Snap-on diagnostic equipment to trace fault codes across electrical, engine management and other onboard systems, whether you've got a warning light on or just want an annual check to confirm everything's running at its best.

What we read

Far more than the engine light.

A modern car runs dozens of control units, and each one logs its own faults. The Snap-on equipment reads across all of them, not only the engine light.

Engine management
The check-engine light and the running faults behind it: sensors, fuelling, ignition and emissions.
ABS & braking electronics
ABS and traction or stability faults that switch the safety systems off without stopping the car.
Airbags & SRS
The airbag and SRS system, where a logged fault can mean it will not deploy in a crash.
Transmission & drivetrain
Gearbox and drivetrain control faults on cars that manage these electronically.
Body & electrical
The body-control side: lights, windows, central locking and the general electrics.
Warning lights

Start with the colour.

Every warning light comes on when you turn the key — that is the car testing its own bulbs, and it is completely normal. The ones that matter are the ones still lit once the engine is running.

Red
Something needs attention now. Stop somewhere safe as soon as you can and deal with it rather than pressing on.
Amber / Yellow
Something needs looking at soon. The car is usually driveable, but it is telling you not to leave it.
Green / Blue
Information only. A system is on and working as it should. Nothing to do.

What each light is telling you

The common ones, and what to do about each. Symbols vary a little between makes. If yours isn't here, your handbook will name it, or send us a photo of the dash.

Stop and deal with it
Engine temperature

The engine is overheating. Nearly always a lack of coolant or a fault somewhere in the coolant system.

What to do: Stop somewhere safe and let it cool. Carrying on with an overheating engine causes expensive damage, and sometimes damage that cannot be undone at all.

Oil pressure / engine oil

A problem with the oil — too little, or occasionally too much. Too little and parts wear and overheat; too much and they are over-lubricated and drag.

What to do: Check the level on the dipstick when the engine is cold and the car is level. If it is low, top it up with the right grade. If the light stays on with a correct level, stop driving it and call us.

Battery / charging

The battery is not charging properly. Usually the alternator, the drive belt, or the power cables rather than the battery itself.

What to do: Head somewhere safe rather than continuing a long journey. As the voltage drops you can lose lights, power steering and ABS with very little warning.

Brake system

Either the handbrake is still on, or the brake fluid is low, or there is a fault in the braking system.

What to do: Check the handbrake is fully off first. If it stays lit, treat it as urgent and stop — this is the one light never to gamble on.

Power steering

The power assistance has failed. You will usually feel this before you see it — the steering goes heavy and the car is sluggish to turn, especially parking.

What to do: If you can still steer it safely, come straight to us. If not, pull over and call for assistance.

Airbag

The airbag system is deactivated. Sometimes that is deliberate, if a rear-facing child seat is fitted. Otherwise it is a fault.

What to do: If you have not turned it off on purpose, get it looked at — the airbag may not deploy in a crash.

Check engine / powertrain

The catch-all. The engine management system has logged a fault and often puts the car into a reduced-power mode to protect itself. It covers everything from a loose fuel cap to a failing sensor, which is exactly why the symbol alone tells you nothing.

What to do: Book it in. Drive gently on the way, avoiding hard acceleration or braking. This is the light diagnostics exists for — the code behind it is what actually identifies the fault.

ABS

A fault in the anti-lock braking system.

What to do: Your brakes still work, but the anti-lock does not — so a hard stop on a wet or icy road can lock the wheels and you lose steering with them. Worth sorting before winter, not after.

Tyre pressure (TPMS)

Pressure in at least one tyre has dropped below where it should be. Mandatory on new cars since 2014.

What to do: Check all four against the pressures in your handbook or on the door pillar — they differ front to rear on a lot of cars, and the correct figure is not the one on the tyre wall.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

The filter that traps soot in a diesel exhaust is clogging up. Common on cars that only do short, cold, stop-start journeys and never get hot enough to clear themselves.

What to do: Get it looked at rather than ignored. A blocked DPF left long enough stops being a cleaning job and becomes a replacement.

Traction control / stability

Flashing means the system is actively working — you are losing grip. Staying on solid usually means it has been switched off or has a fault.

What to do: Flashing in bad weather is normal and it is doing its job. Permanently lit in the dry is worth a check.

Glow plug (diesel)

On a diesel this normally lights while the plugs pre-heat and goes out before you start. If it stays on or flashes afterwards, there is a fault.

What to do: If it flashes while running, book it in. Failing glow plugs show up first as hard starting on cold mornings.

Green and blue lights

Information, not warnings. Indicators, main beam, cruise control, lights on: a system is switched on and behaving. Nothing needed.

Anyone can plug in a reader and tell you a number. What you're paying for is what happens next.

Snap-on equipment connects to the car and pulls the stored fault codes from its control units. Modern cars run dozens of them — engine, gearbox, ABS, airbags, body electrics — and each one logs its own faults.

We work out what the code actually means
A code names a circuit, not a culprit. The same code can be a failed sensor, a broken wire, a bad connection, or a genuine mechanical fault the sensor is correctly reporting. Reading it out is the easy part; knowing which of those it is comes from having seen it before.

We test before we replace
The reason this matters: fitting the part the code names is how people end up paying twice when the fault comes straight back. We would rather find it once.

When it is worth it

When to book a diagnostic.

A warning light is on
The obvious one. The light names a system, the code behind it names the circuit. That is the starting point, not the answer.
The car is running rough
Misfires, hesitation, a flat spot, stalling or a drop in economy all log codes even when no light shows.
A light that comes and goes
An intermittent fault still stores its code. A fault that flickers is often one that is about to stay on for good.
Before you buy a used car
A read of the stored codes shows what the dashboard might not, before you commit to it.
An annual health check
Even with nothing showing, a scan confirms the systems are reporting clean and catches the quiet ones early.

How does the diagnostic process work?
We connect Snap-on diagnostic equipment to read fault codes across your engine management, electrical and other onboard systems, then explain what’s actually causing the issue before recommending any work.
When will I find out what it costs?
The diagnostic fee is confirmed when you arrive. There’s no way to give an accurate price before we’ve connected the equipment and seen what’s going on, and any repair that follows is priced on what the diagnostic actually finds.
Can I book a diagnostic check online?
Yes — search "Diagnostics" in the Other Services step of our booking form and we’ll reserve a slot.
My warning light came on and then went off again. Do I still need it checked?
Probably, yes. An intermittent fault still logs a code, and that code stays stored in the car even after the light goes out. A fault that comes and goes is often one that is about to come and stay.
Can’t I just buy a code reader off the internet?
You can, and a cheap one will show you the code. The catch is that the code names a circuit rather than the part that’s failed, so it tells you where to look, not what to fix. That gap is where people end up replacing a sensor that was working perfectly and reporting a real fault correctly.
Will a warning light fail my MOT?
Some do. The airbag, ABS, brake system, engine management and tyre pressure warning lights are all checked as part of the test, and a light that stays on is a fail on its own regardless of how the car drives. Worth sorting before the test rather than after.
The light is on but the car drives fine. Is it urgent?
It depends on the colour. Red means stop and deal with it. Amber means the car is usually driveable but is asking you not to leave it — plenty of amber faults are cheap now and expensive in three months. A car feeling fine is not evidence that nothing is wrong; most of what a diagnostic finds was invisible from the driver’s seat.
Do you need to keep the car?
Usually not for the diagnostic itself. If the fault only shows up under certain conditions we might ask to keep it a bit longer, and we’ll tell you that up front rather than after.
